Last Week’s Highlights

Belarus Forces Plane to Land and Captures Dissident

In the former USSR country of Belarus, Roman Protasevich is considered a political dissident. His creation of a digital community on Telegram is one of many forms of protest against the long-standing government of Aleksandr Lukashenko. While flying over Belarus, a Ryanair plane was forced to land for the country’s authorities to arrest Protasevich. An additional five others never made it to their final destination of Lithuania, who all likely remain in Belarus.

China Targets Bitcoin in Clampdown

China is the country with the most mining of the cryptocurrency Bitcoin, among others. However, it doesn’t seem that the Chinese government is too pleased. As a result, Beijing has announced restrictions on mining activities, likely due to the enormous amounts of energy used in the process. These actions have already appeared to affect Bitcoin’s value globally practically overnight.

Modi’s Loosening Grip on India’s Narrative

For much of the coronavirus pandemic, India’s PM Narendra Modi appeared to be managing the spread of SARS-Cov-2. However, the last month has shown a devastating turn for the worst, with the estimated death rate soaring as hospitals remain full and unable to keep up with coronavirus case numbers. Now, the BJP leader faces serious criticism not only from external sources, but also from local media.

Global Bounce Back Could Be Unfair

Economies around the world have undoubtedly taken some of the largest, most unexpected hits in recent history. The question remains; who will recover and how quickly? Even in ‘developed’ countries like the US, many experts are unsure of the country’s economy to improve for all. Debt has risen tremendously, as markets collapsed. ‘Emerging markets’ could also face widening inequality gaps.

More Things to Sip On…

More than half of the US is now vaccinated… But experts say it isn’t enough.

Alibaba co-founder Jack Ma is taking a step back from business school obligations.

Democracy in Myanmar faces another hit, as former leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi arrives in military court.
