Last Week’s Highlights

Chinese Rocket Lands in the Sea

After about a week of speculation over exactly where their rocket would land in its fall back to Earth, the office in charge of China’s space programs confirmed that it had touched down in the middle of the ocean. In fact, the majority of the rocket’s makeup eventually burned away during the fall. Now, Beijing representatives claim that US officials and media sources unfairly blew the event out of proportion.

Problematic Pandemic Patents

Patents have long protected pharmaceutical companies and medications from being produced by other companies and governments. At the same time, this has made medicine expensive and inaccessible to many people. The US announced that it wants to keep vaccines patent-free, to help the world. The EU, however, doesn’t appear pleased, as this could open doors for China and Russia to use US technology to advance their own pharmaceutical development.

Ethereum Reaches New Record

As the top competitor to Bitcoin, Ethereum faces no small feat. As investors become increasingly comfortable with cryptocurrency, Ethereum could become more and more valuable. Though it uses the same blockchain technology as Bitcoin, Ethereum seems to be aiming to focus not only on investing, but also the use of the crypto coin for use in banks and personal transactions. Last week, it made major moves by reaching a value of over $4,000.

India’s Covid Crisis Deepens

Despite reaching global records for national infections over the past few weeks, India’s COVID-19 crisis doesn’t appear to be slowing down. US specialist Dr. Anthony Fauci has expressed concern, stating that India’s best hope could come from a total lockdown. A lockdown of this magnitude could severely affect the country’s huge informal economy, though the spread of COVID-19 could give officials no other choice to protect the people.
