Last Week’s Highlights
Google Bows Down to France
Tech giants have faced legal trouble and intense scrutiny over the last decade in Europe, often with large settlements to pay. In the latest chapter, France has gone to court with Google over advertising rules and regulations. This time, the company faced monopoly charges over unethical use of personal data. Though it may seem like a drop in the bucket for Google at $267 million in settlement money, the case represents a new precedent for big tech companies.
G7 Tax Agreement Could Push Through
This past weekend, former FED leader and now US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen announced a new plan to cooperate internationally to level taxes. This deal could prove monumental, as it’s aim is to set a minimum tax percentage to cut down on havens for businesses to take advantage of. However, critics claim that increased taxes could negatively impact businesses.
Coming Up This Week
Bezos Brothers Are Going to Space
Jeff Bezos’ company Blue Origin has been planning a highly anticipated space trip for the last while. Though the company has already completed numerous test runs, not a single person has been on board to experience Bezos’ dream. In July of this year, it will become reality, with Jeff Bezos and brother Mark on board to be among the first.
US Visit to Taiwan over Vaccines
In what many are taking as a medical diplomacy effort, the United States announced that it will provide three-quarters of a million vaccines to the island of Taiwan. Taiwan’s territory has been long disputed, with China claiming ownership and many residents claiming independence. Though the Chinese government denies involvement, some claim that it has made efforts to starve the island of vaccine access. With the US now donating vaccines, Beijing could take this action as an affront to their control in the region.
