Last Week’s Highlights

The FDA Gives Authorization for Distribution of Pfizer Vaccine

The Food and Drug Administration finally gave authorization this past Friday for pharma giant Pfizer to begin the distribution of its coronavirus vaccine. The vaccine, which was created on part of Pfizer and BioNTech, is believed to be one of the most effective, with a rate of 95% effectiveness. Permission to distribute was granted as an emergency measure, ironically on the day with the most reported COVID-19 deaths in the United States.

Federal Executions Rock the United States

After Trump’s recent reinstallation of federal execution policy following 17 years without, two men have been put to death in the last two days. There are four additional executions that are expected to take place before Joe Biden takes office in January, 2021. For more than 100 years, during a transition period between presidents, executions have been put on hold. The Trump Administration has paid no heed to these traditions, and instead has continued to schedule more executions.

Coming Up This Week

Latin America, the Pandemic, and Women Entrepreneurs

In Latin America, it is becoming increasingly clear that women will be the main workforce to help the region’s economies make it out of the current pandemic-induced recession. As women’s participation in the economies of various Latin American countries has continued to grow, that of men has lessened. For years, it has been harder for women in the region to start businesses, and this is based on a variety of factors, including less access to education, startup costs, and more.

EU to Cut Carbon Emissions

The European Union agreed this past week on new measures to cut carbon emissions in the region. The agreement highlights reducing carbon emissions 55% from those in 1990 for 2030, meaning that they have just 10 more years to be on par. Part of the idea behind these new measures is for the EU to be carbon neutral in the next 30 years.
