Last Week’s Highlights

The US Fed’s Recent Meeting
When the US’ Federal Reserve has its regular meetings, the world often holds its breath. This past week was no exception. However, the Fed’s Chair, Jerome Powell shared that the central bank plans to maintain interest rates where they are for the time being. As a result, US stocks appeared to bounce back to their predicted tracks.

Brazil’s Population Suffers, Their President Makes It Personal
Unfortunately, Brazil’s current crisis due to COVID-19 appears to be one of the worst around the world. In fact, some believe that the current pandemic has been the gravest health catastrophe the South American country has ever experienced. Meanwhile, President Jair Bolsonaro has refused to take the pandemic seriously, claiming that it “is part of life”. On top of this, Bolsonaro has claimed that criticism of him for these (among other) reasons has started a “war” attacking him.

As travel restarts and people begin to drive, fly, and move around in general, petroleum is expected to make a major rebound. While there have been some concerns with oil as of late, the end of 2021 could see its return to pre-COVID-19 prices. Although green movements continue to grow and gain support around the world, fossil fuels like oil are still expected to maintain importance.

Europe’s Vaccination Plan and COVID-19’s Third Wave
As vaccination campaigns continue underway around the world, Europe doesn’t seem to have managed to keep a third wave of COVID-19 from taking it by storm. Original plans for the region to vaccinate residents before the summer seem to now be under threat. Part of the problem? Virus mutations and late delivery of vaccine doses.
